Nevada DECA Competitive Event Judging

Information on Being a DECA Judge

Do you have time to assist students with their career goals?  You can, by being a competitive events judge.  It requires as little as a half day time commitment.  You'll be helping high school students prepare for successful careers.  These students have worked all year to prepare for their competitions both inside and outside of the classroom.  These students have personally raised money to pay to participate in these events and have their skills evaluated by you.  It's easy to judge. Registered judges receive detailed information and a thorough judge orientation is held on site before competition begins.  People who have judged before enjoyed their experience and return to judge again.  Here is a comment from one such judge:

“Please sign me up for the upcoming DECA conference. I had the opportunity to represent the grocery (retail) industry several years ago. I was, to say the least, very impressed with the program and the professional job that DECA does preparing its participants for the retail and marketing fields. I am available to spend an entire day (or two). I am looking forward to hearing from you. Thanks. Dan Magruder, District Manager/Smart & Final.”

There are competitions in a range of industries including advertising, entrepreneurship, fashion, finance, hospitality, international marketing, restaurant, retail, sales and more... As a judge, you will participate in role-play activities during which students will act out their solutions to real business world situations. You will then evaluate the students' performances using a brief, easy to complete evaluation form.

The term "Judge" is often very misleading, when we think of judges we often conjure up images of people in black robes sitting behind large desks handing down arbitrary decisions. A DECA Judge is very different!

When you volunteer to judge a DECA event, you are acting as more of a coach and role-model for bright and motivated students. Collectively, DECA Judges help to evaluate the work of student attendees at our State and District Career Development Conferences.  As a DECA Judge, you will use your background in business, entrepreneurship, marketing and life to evaluate students’ demonstration of marketing and business skills and knowledge.
